Bruckner Symphony No. 5
Bruckner Symphony No. 5 performed 2021 by conductor Christian Thieleman and the Wiener Philharmoniker. Program includes Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5, plus, for confirmed Bruckner fanatics, two early Bruckner symphonies that are not included normally in the “complete” symphonies 1 through 9:
Symphony in F minor (aka Study Symphony or Symphony No. 00)
Symphony in D minor (aka Die Nullte or Symphony No. 0)
It appears this is the first time Symphonies “00” and “0” have been recorded in Blu-ray. PR also includes “extensive bonus material.” Directed for TV by Benedict Mirow. Released 2022, disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio sound. Grade: D+
Our “D” grade doesn’t mean something is of low quality. It just means we don’t suggest you buy this unless you know what you are doing and have a good reason to want it.

It’s summer 2020 during the pandemic. We are at the horrible Felsenriteschule stage for a Salzburg Festival opera. The director for Elektra is eurotrashmaster Krzysztof Warlikowski. No curtain, no fly, no turntable—it’s like being outside except you are in a cave. Since this was a stable for horses, it has plumbing . . .

Introduction
The main theme of this review is an examination of the Robert Wilson “anti-Freud” concept of the unconscious mind. This review also reports on what appears to be the only modern recording available new from a trusted label of Handel’s Messiah as arranged by none other that Wolfgang Mozart (K. 572)!

There have been 3 major versions of Romeo and Juliet.
The original, choreographed by Lavrovsky, played in Russia during World War II. It was an ideological ballet featuring progressive young people vs. feudal traditions. Prokofiev’s score for this, now considered to be the greatest ballet score not written by Tchaikovsky, was pretty controversial back in those days.
Cranko in 1962 took up Prokofiev’s music and added a narrative ballet that follows well the basic themes of the Shakespeare play. It doesn’t have an epilogue with the two warring families making peace, but everyone knows that’s the whole point of the story.

Beethoven wrote 3 versions of what I call “Leonore/Fidelio”:
1805, now often if not usually called “Leonore 1”
1806, now often if not usually called “Leonore 2”
1814, now usually called “Fidelio”
It’s now December 25, 2020 (yes, this is my Christmas present to you). We already have two versions of the 1814 Fidelio in HDVD on our Alphalist (one on Opus Arte from Opernhaus Zürich and another on Sony from the 2015 Salzburg Festival).
Now subject title brings us a rendition of Leonore 2 from the Teater an der Wien. Of course, life being inherently complicated, Unitel calls it “Fidelio (1806)” instead of “Leonore 2.” (The person to blame for all this is not I but Beethoven, who was a rather complicated guy himself.)

This video was made 6 years ago—a bad sign. There’s no director because this is an un-staged concert production of the opera. The package does credit Felix Breisach for “scenic arrangement.” That means, I think, that . . .

This video was made 6 years ago—a bad sign. There’s no director because this is an un-staged concert production of the opera. The package does credit Felix Breisach for “scenic arrangement.” That means, I think, that everyone asked Breisach from time to time, “Where should I stand for this number?” There is a stage and costume designer credited. This means, I think, that the singers may wear clothes that vaguely suggest something about their character without looking ridiculous, and there may be a few simple props. Is there some rather shameless puffing going on here? Well, maybe not.
